Applying Through UCAS or Direct to the University? What Indian Students Should Answer (2027 Entry)
You are filling a UK university form, a scholarship form or an accommodation form, and suddenly it asks: “Are you applying through UCAS or direct to the university?” Most Indian students and parents freeze here, because nobody explains what it means. This guide gives you the simple answer, the 2027 UCAS dates in Indian time, and the mistakes that can cost you a seat.
Choosing the route is the first step of the UK university application process for Indian students. Whether you are making a UCAS application from India for a bachelor’s or applying for a master’s on the university website, getting this step right decides your deadlines, your fee and how many universities you can apply to.
Quick answer
- Bachelor’s (UG) in the UK → usually through UCAS. A few universities also let international students apply direct.
- Master’s (PG) in the UK → almost always direct to the university on its own online portal. UCAS is not used for most master’s courses.
- Foundation, pre-sessional English and January-intake courses → usually direct.
- Answer the form with the route you have actually used. If you have not applied yet, decide the route first (see the table below).
What does “UCAS or direct” actually mean?
UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the UK’s central system for undergraduate admissions. You fill one application, choose up to five universities/courses, write one personal statement, add one reference, and pay one fee. UCAS then sends your application to all your choices.
Direct application means you apply on the university’s own website (or through its approved partner/agent). Each university gets a separate application. This is the normal route for master’s degrees and for many foundation and January-intake courses.
Universities ask the question on later forms (scholarships, accommodation, enquiry forms) simply to match your file — so they can find your application in the right system. Giving the wrong answer can delay your scholarship or accommodation, so answer carefully.
UCAS vs direct application — side by side
| Through UCAS | Direct to university | |
|---|---|---|
| Used for | Most UK bachelor’s degrees | Most master’s, foundation, pre-sessional, many January intakes; some bachelor’s for international students |
| Number of universities | Up to 5 choices in one application | One application per university |
| Fee (2027 entry) | £34.50 for the whole application (up to 5 choices) | Depends on the university — many charge nothing |
| Personal statement | One statement in 3 sections, 4,000 characters total, sent to all choices | The university’s own format — can be tailored to each course |
| Deadlines | Fixed UCAS dates (see below) | Each university sets its own; popular courses fill early |
| Best for | Students comparing several UK universities for a bachelor’s | Master’s students, and UG students set on one specific university |
Applying for a bachelor’s? UCAS 2027 dates in Indian time
All UCAS deadlines are 6:00 PM UK time. In January the UK is on GMT, so 6:00 PM UK = 11:30 PM IST. In summer (British Summer Time) it becomes 10:30 PM IST. Do not leave it to the last hour — the reference must also be attached before you can submit.
| Date (2027 entry) | What happens |
|---|---|
| 15 Oct 2026 | Equal consideration date for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses (already passed) |
| 13 Jan 2027, 11:30 PM IST | Equal consideration date for most undergraduate courses — apply before this |
| 25 Feb 2027 | UCAS Extra opens (if you have no offers) |
| 30 Jun 2027 | Last date for applications to be sent to universities; after this you go into Clearing |
| 2 Jul 2027 | Clearing opens |
| 23 Sep 2027 | Final date for 2027 entry applications |

The new UCAS personal statement (3 questions)
Since 2026 entry, the personal statement is no longer one long essay. UCAS now asks three questions, with a total limit of 4,000 characters including spaces and a minimum of 350 characters per section (UCAS):
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
- What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
Can an Indian student apply direct for a UK bachelor’s?
Yes, at some universities — but each one has its own rules. Examples from the universities’ own pages (rules can change every cycle, so always check the current page before applying):
- Kingston University — free direct application for international students, but only if you are applying to Kingston alone and do not already have a UCAS Hub account for that cycle. If you apply to more than one UK university, you must use UCAS. (Kingston)
- Oxford Brookes — for September entry you can apply direct or through UCAS; January entry and international foundation courses are direct only. (Oxford Brookes)
- Teesside University — international students can apply direct for full-time undergraduate courses using the university’s online form. (Teesside)
- University of Hull — apply direct through one of its approved agents if Hull is your top choice; use UCAS if applying to more than one UK university. (Hull)
UCAS rules most Indian students don’t know
- Oxford or Cambridge — not both. In the same year you can apply to only one of them through UCAS.
- Medicine, dentistry, veterinary: maximum 4 of your 5 choices can be in these subjects. The 5th must be a different course.
- Firm and insurance choice: once your offers arrive, you accept one as firm (first choice) and one as insurance (backup with lower grades). Declining the rest is final — think before you click.
- No offers? UCAS Extra (from 25 Feb 2027) lets you add one more choice at a time; Clearing (from 2 Jul 2027) fills remaining seats.
- One personal statement for all 5 choices. If your 5 courses are very different (say Computer Science and Economics), the statement will feel weak for all of them. Keep the choices in one subject family.
After you apply: offers, CAS and the visa
- Conditional offer — you still have to meet something: Class 12 / degree marks, IELTS/PTE score, or documents.
- Unconditional offer — all conditions are met. You can now pay the deposit and move to CAS.
- CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — the university issues it once you are fully accepted. You need it for the UK Student visa.
- Good news: the visa process is the same whether you came through UCAS or applied direct. The route only changes how you reach the offer, not the visa.
So which route is right for you — and where we come in
The route is only the first decision. The real work — picking the right 5 choices, writing a statement that works for all of them, getting the reference on time and handling offers — is where most Indian students lose seats or scholarships. Here is how it works for each type of student, and what we do for you:
- Bachelor’s student (after Class 12) → usually UCAS. You get only 5 choices and one personal statement for all of them, so one weak choice or a generic statement wastes the whole application. We shortlist your 5 choices to match your marks and budget, help you write the 3-part statement, manage the reference and submit before 13 January.
- Bachelor’s student set on one university → some universities accept direct applications, but the rules differ at each one and some accept it only through approved agents. We tell you which universities on your list allow it and file it for you.
- Master’s student → direct to each university, each with its own portal, documents and deadline. We handle every portal, the SOP for each course, and track all offers in one place.
- January intake or foundation year → usually direct, with shorter timelines. See our UK September vs January intake guide.
- Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, vet → UCAS, with the October deadline plus extra tests or interviews. Start at least a year in advance.

5 mistakes Indian students make with this question
- Applying to the same course twice — once through UCAS and once direct. This can confuse the admissions team and delay your decision. Pick one route per university.
- Ticking “UCAS” on a master’s form just because it sounds official. If you applied on the university’s website, the answer is “direct”.
- Missing the 13 January deadline because of the time difference — 6 PM UK is 11:30 PM in India in January.
- Waiting for the reference — UCAS will not let you submit without it. Ask your school or college at least 3–4 weeks early.
- Using one generic statement for direct applications — the advantage of applying direct is that you can tailor each statement to the course. Use it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need UCAS for a master’s degree in the UK?
Usually not. Most UK master’s courses are applied for directly on the university’s website. Oxford Brookes, for example, says that for most postgraduate courses you need to make a direct application.
How much does a UCAS application cost for 2027 entry?
£34.50 for the 2027 cycle, which covers up to five university choices in a single application.
Is a direct application weaker than a UCAS application?
No. Where a university accepts direct applications, both routes are assessed on the same academic and English requirements. The route only changes how your application reaches the university.
I already applied through UCAS. The scholarship form asks “UCAS or direct” — what do I write?
Write “UCAS” and keep your UCAS Personal ID handy — the university uses it to find your application.
