Why Your Score Report Says 2 Years but Australia Accepts 3
This is the single most misunderstood point, so let’s be precise:
- Pearson’s rule: your score is visible and sendable in your myPTE account for 2 years (extended to 3 years for viewing/sending since October 2019). After that it disappears from your account automatically.
- Australia’s immigration rule: the Department of Home Affairs accepts an English test result taken within 3 years before your visa application for skilled/PR categories — Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English levels.
So a 2.5-year-old score can be gone from your account but still legally valid for your PR application. If the Department needs to verify a result older than two years, they can contact Pearson’s support team to verify it manually. Always download and save the PDF score report the day you receive it — this is the mistake that costs people their applications.
The August 2025 Rule Change (most guides miss this)
On 7 August 2025, the list of English language tests approved for Australian visa purposes changed. Per the Department of Home Affairs: results from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 may still be used as evidence of English proficiency for visa purposes until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa subclass. If your test predates that cutoff, do not assume it’s dead — check your specific subclass before booking a retest you may not need.
What Actually Happens When Your PTE Expires
- Your score disappears from your myPTE account — you can no longer send it to institutions electronically

- Month 22: Last safe window to start a new university application on that score.
- PR applicants: track the 3-year date, not the 2-year one — but keep the PDF, because your account won’t show it.
Rule of thumb: book your test when you are within 12–18 months of applying. Taking PTE “early to get it out of the way” is how scores get wasted.
