How the calculator works
- Tuition: your first-year fee minus anything already paid and shown on your CAS.
- Living costs: the monthly amount for London or outside London, for your course length, up to 9 months.
- Accommodation: money already paid to the university for its own housing can be deducted, up to £1,570 (£1,529 for applications before 30 November 2026).
- Exchange rate: today’s GBP to INR market rate loads automatically and refreshes daily. You can change it.
Why we add a buffer
UKVI converts money held in rupees using the OANDA spot rate on the date of your application. If the rupee weakens between the day you deposit the money and the day you apply, the same rupee balance is worth fewer pounds. A 5% buffer protects you from that.
The rules that cause most refusals
- The full amount must stay in the account for 28 days in a row. One dip below the figure restarts the count.
- The 28-day period must end within 31 days of your visa application.
- A parent’s account works with proof of relationship and a consent letter. Money in a relative’s or friend’s account does not count.

Frequently asked questions
How much bank balance is needed for a UK student visa from India?
Your unpaid first-year tuition fee plus living costs for up to 9 months. From 30 November 2026 that is £1,570 a month in London or £1,203 a month outside London. Use the calculator above to see your exact figure in rupees.
Which exchange rate does UKVI use?
The OANDA spot rate on the date you apply, not the date of your bank statement.
Can I show an education loan instead of cash?
Yes. An education loan from a regulated lender can count if the sanction letter meets UKVI’s requirements. We check this for students every week.
